Impetus

Welcome to Strange Loops and Monkey Puzzle Trees (SL&MPT to the initiated). My title isn't a desperate attempt to sound wacky or über-crazy but refers to two heroes of mine, Joseph Banks and Douglas Hofstadter, two pretty cool cats who changed the way I thought about both science and culture. Which is pretty pertinent as that's the focus of this blog, the science/culture crossover barrier.

The next hundred or so years of human endeavour are more than likely going to see some of the largest perturbations in both of the scientific and cultural realms. Science will fundamentally evolve from observation leading to understanding, to understanding facilitating manipulation. The starter's pistol was the atomic bomb, and the finish line is anyone's guess.

As a biochemist (with smatterings of structural biology and biophysics) in training I'll primarily focus on the biological sciences, but I'm interested in chemical, physical, astronomical, and technological advances also. One thing that I will try to do however is to focus on esoteric, historical, and underexposed aspects of the latest theories and discoveries. Unfortunately there will also be some ruminating, posturing and pseudo-philosophical babble no doubt.

Whether it's a museum exhibition or competitive inhibition I will indulge my ego by writing about it - and hey maybe some people may even read it.
